Josephine Ninsiima, the Program Officer for Climate Change, Environment, and Disaster Risk Management at the Directorate of Household and Community Transformation of the Church of Uganda, announced the commencement of the Church of Uganda Environment Week, aimed at fostering environmental stewardship and climate conservation.
The Environment Week, which kicked off today, provides an opportunity for individuals to unite in caring for the planet entrusted to humanity by God. Ninsiima outlined several activities scheduled for the week and encouraged participation from all members of the community.
One of the key highlights of the Environment Week includes Environment stewardship sermons to be delivered during the Online Church of Uganda lunch hour fellowship from today until Friday, along with Friday overnight prayers. Prominent figures within the Church, including Bishops, Clergy, and other leaders, will address congregants on the importance of climate conservation and environment stewardship from a biblical perspective.
Archbishop of the Church of Uganda is scheduled to address the Province on Wednesday at 9 am via media channels from Namirembe, providing further guidance on environmental conservation and measures to mitigate climate change.
Moreover, a significant event during the week is a webinar scheduled for March 22, 2024, hosted by the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda. The webinar aims to bring together Church leaders from all levels across the Province, discussing “The role of the church in advancing climate action.”
In addition, there will be a Carbon Harvest awareness conference held online on March 20, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, hosted by the Provincial Secretary. The conference will target Diocesan Secretaries, Household and Community Transformation Coordinators, and Estate Managers, focusing on raising awareness about carbon harvesting.
The Church of Uganda emphasizes the collective responsibility of safeguarding the environment, calling upon all members to actively participate in the Environment Week activities. This initiative reflects the Church’s commitment to promoting sustainable practices and addressing climate challenges.
