Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, has expressed his appreciation for the significant role played by the Mothers’ Union in nation building, community development, and raising morally upright children who honor God.
Speaking at the Provincial Mothers’ Union thanksgiving service in Namirembe, Kampala, today, Archbishop Kaziimba encouraged mothers to safeguard their children by nurturing them in a Godly manner, praying for them, and serving as positive role models. He also highlighted the consequences of parental neglect, which exposes children to negative influences from social media and television, leading some of them to engage in criminal activities.
During the service, Archbishop Kaziimba launched several initiatives, including Mary’s Day, a prayer guide for the Provincial Mothers’ Union, a resource manual addressing gender-based violence, a Music Dance and Drama Set piece, an environmental conservation drive, and the steering committee for the construction of the Provincial Mothers’ Union House.
Grace Murengezi, the President of the Provincial Mothers’ Union, outlined their plans to promote tree planting at all levels within the Church structure. This initiative aims to launch fruit tree planting activities at the parish level throughout the province. Mrs. Murengezi also emphasized the importance of Music Dance and Drama events, which will be organized from the parish level and culminate in a provincial celebration. Additionally, she highlighted their commitment to combating gender-based violence through training, prevention, response, and management, utilizing the Mother’s Union Listen, Observe, and Act (MULOA) approach.
“We are dedicated to empowering our members and survivors of gender-based violence in areas such as economic empowerment and food security. Furthermore, we will commence construction of the Provincial Mothers’ Union House,” Mrs. Murengezi stated.
Representing the Katikiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda Kingdom, Owek. Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule, the Speaker of Buganda Kingdom’s Lukiiko (Parliament), commended the Mothers’ Union for their efforts in promoting development at the household level, addressing poverty, and instilling discipline within their communities.
The service also included a dedication ceremony for Lay Canon Dr. Ruth Senyonyi, the former Provincial Mothers’ Union President, who has been appointed by the President of Uganda to chair the Uganda AIDS Commission.
Among the attendees at the thanksgiving service were Mr. Samuel Bakutana, President of the Provincial Fathers Union, Balaam Muheebwa, the Provincial Treasurer, Rev. Simon Peter Ddembe Lya Yesu, the Director of Mission and Outreach, past Provincial Mothers’ Union Presidents, Diocesan Mothers’ Union Presidents and Coordinators, as well as numerous Mothers’ Union members.
