The National Resistance Movement (NRM) MPs are threatening to utilize clause 21 of the parliamentary rules to compel Speaker Anita Among to recall Parliament from recess.
MPs Theodore Sekikubo of Lwemiyaga County and Barnabas Tinkasimire of Buyaga West demand justification for Parliament’s suspension on Tuesday by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, despite Among having already recalled it from recess.
Expressing frustration over the perceived inaction, Ssekikuubo highlighted the MPs’ dilemma in the face of the scandal, stating, “We can’t now talk with our heads high on the streets of Kampala,” and emphasizing the lack of answers.
Ssekikuubo, often seen as a rebel within the NRM ranks, urged urgent action and called on the Speaker to reconvene Parliament for a thorough debate on the allegations. He criticized Prime Minister Nabbanja for allegedly obstructing parliamentary proceedings and encroaching on the legislature’s independence.
The situation escalated as Ssekikuubo revealed that a planned plenary sitting was abruptly canceled following a directive from the Prime Minister, raising concerns about executive interference in parliamentary affairs. He concluded, “Parliament has been captured. This is very strange; Parliament is being run down.”
