Police in Mbarara City Central Division are holding a businessman accused of sodomy and human trafficking.
The suspect is Nelson Tumushabe, a 37-year-old businessman at Mbarara Central Market. Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police spokesperson, explains that the suspect took advantage of his 22-year-old victim by pretending to offer him a job opportunity on the night of October 10, 2023.
Kasasira explains that the victim first encountered the suspect at Mailo Two along Masaka Road while searching for employment in Mbarara City on October 9, 2023.
The suspect engaged the victim, posing as a person familiar with the area. Subsequently, the suspect inquired about the victim’s purpose in Mbarara City.
The victim revealed that he was seeking employment, to which the suspect promised to assist him.
Kasasira narrates that the suspect later took the victim to his residence, where he allegedly threatened him and forcibly engaged in anal intercourse with him multiple times.
The following morning, the suspect took the victim for breakfast and later to Mbarara Central Market, where he works. However, the suspect reportedly informed the victim that securing a job without a national identity card would be challenging. As a result, the victim reported the matter to the police.
According to Kasasira, a team of investigators conducted a medical examination on the victim, confirming that he had inflammations and had been subjected to anal intercourse leading to the arrest of the suspect.
Preliminary investigations indicate that during a search of the suspect’s residence, several significant pieces of evidence were discovered.
These included 22 personal water-based lubricants, 52 condoms, 19 HIV testing kits, and 2 containers of ARVs.
The suspect has been charged with two counts of human trafficking and engaging in sexual acts against the order of nature carrying a potential penalty of life imprisonment.
