Police’s Flying Squad has launched a hunt for armed thugs who shot two people and varnished more than 80 million Shillings on Friday night.
The victims of the attack have been identified as Lawrence Lutaseera, 45 and his worker, Rashid Ssenyonga 27, who were residents of Nakilama cell, Kyengera town council, in Wakiso district.
Lutaseera and Ssenyonga were shot at around 10:30 pm on Friday by thugs who seem to have trailed Lutaseera from their mobile shop to his home.
Lutaseera’s wife Norah Patricia Kyazzike, said she and her partner reached their home at 10:28 pm and called Ssenyonga to open the gate.
But as soon as they entered the compound, two armed men suddenly opened fire at her husband and the gateman.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson said the robbers made off with over 80 million Shillings, several mobile phones and a vehicle.
Kyazzike said they immediately notified police about the incident but it was too late to find the robbers.
Kyengera Town Council Chairman Mathias Walukagga and Onyango have condemned the murder and cautioned mobile money operators against moving with huge amounts of money, especially in the late evening hours.
“If you’re to carry a huge amount of money, make sure you have security. Avoid moving in patterns that can be easily monitored and mastered by criminals,” Onyango said.
Police recovered 12 cartridge shells and seven live ammunition rounds from the crime scene.
Lutaseera and his wife’s vehicle UBG 169M, was found at Doctor’s Hospital Seguku with blood stains on the seats, a broken driver’s windscreen, and three bullet holes.
Onyango said Lutaseera and Ssenyonga’s bodies were handed over to the city mortuary for an autopsy. The vehicle has since been taken to Nalumunye police station as an exhibit or investigation.
Killings and armed robberies targeting mobile money dealers have been rampant since May this year. Armed robberies targeting mobile money operators have also claimed the life of a police officer Cpl Oloya and have been recorded in Kassanda, Kyotera, Wakiso and other parts of the country.
