“Let’s plant our future today,” is the theme of Ethiopia’s second phase of tree planting Launched by the country’s Prime Minister H.E Ahmed Abiy early June 2023.
It comes on the backdrop of a successful phase 1 where Ethiopians planted 25 billion trees in a campaign where where the Abiy administration has earmarked a target of 50 billion trees in his now famous Green Legacy Initiative.
The campaign started by the country’s Prime Minister H.E Ahmed Abiy in 2019, has received worldwide acclaim due to its goals of cutting down carbon emissions and reducing on the wider global warming phenomenon.
While presenting her plans, Ethiopia’s new Ambassador to Uganda H.E Etsegenet Yimenu, revealed that the Green Legacy is one elements that will define her stay in Uganda.

“The campaign started by our Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, seeks to conserve the environment. It is one I am promoting as part of my tour of duty,” she said.
Across the world, the initiative has received kudos, something Uganda’s regional affairs minister, John Mulimba cited as he addressed the 2nd Afri-run high level conference on Equitable and Reasonable distribution of Transboundary Watercourses.
“We welcome the #GreenLegacy policy pursued by Ethiopia. It is one of the best practices that we should emulate,” Hon John Mulimba, said.
Ethiopia is famous for its resilience and charting its own path, having been the only African country to successfully resist the evil that is colonialism.
The initiative is one way Ethiopia is working to expand her food basket with the growth of fruit seedlings.

The initiative is one way Ethiopia is working to expand her food basket with the growth of fruit seedlings and boost eomployment.It is also seeking to build a climate resilient economy.
According to H.E. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, the initiative strengthens regional cooperation and will ultimately serve as a crucial platform to ensure peace and stability in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa.
Supporting the Green Legacy Initiative, according to Mr. Demeke, has enormous advantages for national, regional, and international adaptation and mitigation of the harmful effects of climate change, biodiversity preservation, combating desertification, ensuring green development, ensuring food security, and achieving the SDGs.
