The newly appointed head teacher, Paul Mwogeza, has been rejected by the Kiira College Butiki Old Boys Association-KICOBA on the grounds that he lacks the will to lead the school because he is not an old boy.
On March 1, 2023, Mwogeza took over the institution when Michael Kisaame retired.
The Kiira College Butiki Old Boys Association claims in a statement that Mwogeza lacks awareness of the school’s history and culture, which is crucial for preserving its legacy.
The organization members told journalists in Jinja city that they had petitioned the Ministry of Education and Sports and the founding authority, Busoga kingdom, to reverse the decision in vain. The association is led by its chairperson, Aggrey Batesaaki.
Batesaaki mentions that they sent the Education Ministry and the Busoga kingdom with four names of qualified candidates for consideration, but their list was thrown out, which he claims undercuts the old student body’s responsibility to maintain the smooth administration of the school.
He makes the case that since those posted to the school are never former students, their former school has seen a sharp fall in athletic and academic performance over the past ten years, leading them to push for one of their own to take over the school.
According to Batesaaki, the school has historically experienced moral decadence with rising drug misuse instances as a result of the hesitation of external school leaders who lack the drive to protect the institution’s future.
Furthermore, he contends that giving Mwogeza this challenging responsibility will undermine their prior accomplishments because he has the management skills necessary to oversee a conventional institution of Butiki’s size.
The Busoga kingdom and the Education Ministry have failed to respond to the demands of the older kids. Mwogeza said to journalists that those who are against his posting are acting selfishly for reasons he has not yet proven.
He charges part of the old boys’ association with infiltrating the leadership groups of still-enrolled students and encouraging them to plan nonviolent protests against him, but he is closely watching the situation to prevent chaos.
