The Police in Mpigi District have arrested 24 Burundian nationals for illegal entry into the country.

Deputy Police Spokesperson Claire Nabakka says that the suspects, one of whom is female, were intercepted by traffic police officers at the Katonga checkpoint in Kayabwe Town Council, traveling in a taxi registration number UBM 711K on Thursday.

Nabakka says that two Ugandans Yasin Katamba the taxi driver and his conductor, Sali Haruna were also arrested for carrying excess passengers and trafficking in Persons.

The 24 foreigners are being held at Mpigi Central Police station as investigations continue.

Police say the suspects paid 539,000 Shillings to Iteka Service and Platinum Bus Services which they boarded at different intervals from Ngoli in Burundi via Tanzania to Kampala.

According to police, while approaching the Mutukula border, the suspects reportedly disembarked from the Platinum Bus three kilometers away and were linked to an unknown Burundian man who led them into Uganda through the porous border points.

The unidentified Burundian national then connected the unsuspecting foreigners to Katamba, a resident of Mpungwe village in Masaka City, and directed him to transport them to Kampala.

In a related development, police in Pader District on Friday arrested another Burundian national identified as Jackson Nyumuro, 18, for loitering without a known place of aboard following a tip-off from Margaret Adokorach, the LC1 Chairperson of Ayeting Village in Laguti Sub-County.
