The Electoral Commission (EC) has started the nomination of candidates to contest in the by-election for Member of Parliament for Bukimbiri County and Gogonyo County constituencies will be conducted starting today, Monday 1st August 2022.

According to spokesperson EC, Paul Bukenya, the nominations will be conducted at the Office of the Returning Officer in the above districts which began today at 9am and it will endi at 5pm.

“Aspiring candidates will be required to fulfil all the requirements for the nomination for Member of Parliament. The nomination exercise will end on Tuesday 2nd August 2022,”he said.

Bukenya further explained that the nominated candidates will conduct campaign meetings for seven (7) days, that is, from Wednesday 3rd August till Tuesday 9th August, 2022.

He said the polling and tallying of results for the by-election of Member of Parliament will be conducted on Thursday 11th August, 2022.

“We call upon stakeholders in those districts to follow this programme and comply with the guidelines that we have issued for these activities,” he said.

In June this year, the Court of Appeal threw out two Members of Parliament subscribing to the National Resistance Movement (NRM), thus ordering fresh elections.

The two legislators, Eddie Kwizeera Wagahungu (Bukimbiri County) in Kisoro district and Derrick Orone (Gogonyo County) in Pallisa district.

The Court ruled that the ballot papers that were used in the elections for Bukimbiri County MP were defective.

The same court unanimously ordered for fresh election in Gogonyo County after finding that there was sufficient evidence against Orone for campaigning on the voting day after Issa Taligoola Bantalib, an independent candidate challenged Orone’s victory accusing him of having engaged in acts of bribery, undue influence, sectarianism, and defamation.
