The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has on Wednesday signed a working cooperation agreement with the Democratic Party(DP) at State House, Entebbe.
President Yoweri Museveni, also the National Chairman of NRM, signed on behalf of the party, while DP President General, Norbert Mao, signed on behalf of DP.
NRM Secretary General, Hon. Richard Todwong, and DP’s Dr. Gerald Siranda, also witnessed the signing.
In his tweet, Museveni who is also the chairperson of the NRM saluted DP for what he termed as the gesture of mature, foresighted and constructive politics.
“I met with Democratic Party President Norbert Mao at State House Entebbe. We signed a cooperation agreement between the NRM and the DP. I salute the DP leadership for this gesture of mature, foresighted and constructive politics, “Museveni noted.
DP spokesperson, Opio Okoler while commenting on the matter, said the document is pending ratification from the party’s National Executive Committee, which will sit on August 14th.
At the moment, he said there is no deal between DP and any other party or person.
“This document was signed pending ratification from the DP National Executive Committee. We relate to all parties through IPOD, and I think this document doesn’t change the status quo. This document can only be ratified by the organs of the party, which in this case is the NEC. I am not at liberty to discuss the document’s contents before the party’s National Executive Committee does,” he said.
Okoler said DP has active organs therefore if a matter comes up, it has to pass through the organs of the party to be considered the stand of the party.
“The members of DP should know that all is not lost. We don’t have demi-gods in DP. The organs are more superior than the individuals. I want to tell members of the general public that DP is still intact and hasn’t merged with another political party, “he assured the public.
In the past, DP has been said by many to be in bed with the ruling NRM party.
For example, in the run up to previous elections, several DP top leaders left the party to join the National Unity Platform as many claimed the DP president Nobert Mao was in bed with President Museveni and his NRM party.
