Biodigesters Becoming Uganda’s No 1 Sewage Solution

2 Mins read

In an effort to help Kampala cope with the problem of waste management, bio digesters are currently the number one solution for homes and commercial buildings that do not have access to the sewer line.

A biodigester is a waste and sewerage treatment system that uses a natural process of aerobic decomposition / digestion and macro-organisms for waste break down.

How it works.

The biodigester septic tank uses the biodegrading process where organic waste is broken down into carbon dioxide, methane and water. The bacteria in the tank feed on the organic waste which turns into water and gas (methane gas) also known as Bio gas. After the water treatment is complete, it leaves through the outlet for recycling or left to soak into the soil.

The biodigester decomposes waste without emitting odorous gas making it suitable for the environment.

It is also suitable for areas with both low and high water tables and can be laid above ground or below ground depending on the water table of the location.

The bio digester accommodates 15 – 400 users on a daily depending on the size installed and can be adjusted to meet larger waste demands making it a suitable alternative for residential or commercial buildings.

Advantages of Biodigester septic Tank

Pocket-friendly & Minimum maintenance

The cost of Installing a biodigester is lower than that of constructing the old septic tank. Maintenance wise it saves money on emptying since a biodigester does not need emptying.

Structure and Design

The biodigester tank is built from reinforced concrete making it a stronger & more long lasting option as compared to other materials brick and plastic septic tanks. The biodigester tank is circular in shape for this reason it can hold pressure without cracking making it suitable for cars to park in the very spot where it has been installed

Time saving

It is also time saving in a way that a bio digesters takes about 2-3 days for work completion which is not the same case when constructing a septic tank.

Minimal Space

The biodigester takes up relatively small space which is a good alternative for people that own small pieces of land.

Eco Friendly

A biodigester has no negative impacts on the environment since it produces no foul smell. The water soaks into the surrounding soil bringing about soil fertility and increase in crop production.

In addition, there are no issues of wastewater overflow in the compound or surrounding making it a cleaner & safer waste management alternative.

How to keep the biodigester functioning properly.

Avoid pouring grease or fatty liquids in the toilet since these will kill the microorganisms responsible for breaking down the waste

Avoid using strong / harsh chemicals when washing the toilet since these also kill the microorganisms in charge of waste breakdown.

Avoid disposing non-degradable waste materials into the biodigester. The materials include pantyliners, sponges, sanitary pads, and condoms. Continuous disposal of these materials into the system will get it blocked and full.
