Prime Minister Robbinah Nabbanja has directed an immediate investigation and possible punitive action unto contractors and the district leadership for the apparent shoddy works on the 40km Nabingola-Kasule-Hapuuyo-Kakabara road.
Nabbanja noted that work done on this funded Kyegegwa road does not commensurate with the Shs1.8bn contract sum.
“We must always ensure that there is value for money in all projects undertaken, such unpatriotic contractors must be denied contracts. Can you put murram on the road which is narrow like that really, with no culverts, no drainage, and nothing has been done?” charged Nabbanja.
The leaders in the area told Nabbanja that the contractor is arrogant and not cooperative, adding that the project was not done perfectly.
“They are very arrogant with district leaders,” one of the leaders told the prime Minister during the meeting.
Nabbanja tasked the contractor to explain why they are doing shoddy work.
She terminated the contract noting that some of these people are the ones tainting the image of government.
“And he must account for the money that has already been used, the work he has done must be commensurate with the money he has been paid and if he fails, we shall arrest him. The engineer your contract is also terminated. If you want to work with the Prime Minister’s office, please do your best. Museveni is tired of those who don’t want to work,” she said.
However, the contractor noted that work is still ongoing, adding that when he was awarded the contract some leaders at the district were not happy because they wanted the work to be done at their level.
Nabbanja also officially commissioned Kabambiro-Mpanga Bridge in Kyegegwa a critical and historical bridge constructed by the government at Shs9billion.
The bridge was constructed by Armpass Technical Services.
It is part of the six bridges under lot 4 of bridges which included Mpondwe Bridge on Kampala- Mubende-Fortportal-Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo, Nsongi Bridge on Kasisi-Rutete-Kabata-Rwenkizi-Kyanga Road.
The project scope involved design, topographical study and hydraulic design, geotechnical investigations, geometric design of approach roads and bridge design.
It also involved fabrication and construction of structural steel girders, construction of the approach roads including drainage structures of 2kms.
