Former army boss, General Katumba Wamala has left hospital a day after he was shot at and injured in a fatal shooting that claimed the lives of his daughter and driver.
Katumba who spoke to journalists before leaving Medipal International Hospital where he was hospitalized following the deadly event on Tuesday morning, used the occasion to pay tribute to the boda boda rider who took him to Malcolm X Clinic in Bukoto, where first aid was administered to him.
His daughter, Brenda Nantongo and driver Haruna Kayondo died after unknown assailants riding on two motorbikes sprayed the vehicle General Katumba and his entourage were traveling in.
A vigil is being held at his residence in Najjera, a Kampala suburb.
Katumba described in detail the damage caused by the two bullets that caught both his arms, praising the medical team at Medipal for saving him.
“What i can say is that i’m much better now, thanks to the medical team, they have done everything they could. They have been able to patch up my left arm which had been shattered. Now im okay, they removed one bullet from the right hand. The incident was unfortunate, i don’t know their motive,” Katumba said.
He added, “We lost two innocent lives, my daughter, very innocent girl, 34 years and my driver, these are innocent citizens who were lost in that gruesome murder. But i hope that one day, one time, these people will be found.”
“I also want to thank the boda boda boy, the guy who volunteered to take me to the hospital, because he even reached a level of saying ‘if you dont jump on it, i’ll force you to get on. I want to thank all Ugandans for showing me love and my president for being there for me.”
According to police preliminary findings, the assailants trailed the motor vehicle as it left the home of Gen Katumba Wamala at Bulabira – Najeera, until when they reached at a remote location 4 Kms away along the Kisota –Kulambiro road.
Its there that they opened fire on his vehicle.
