Omoro County lawmaker Jacob Oulanyah on Thursday took his Oath as MP days before he is set to take over as Speaker.
Oulanyah, who is favourite to win the post of Speaker, laid out his plans after swearing-in, saying economic transformation of the people of Uganda will be his mainstay.
“Today is the beginning of another journey …
A journey in which we must achieve a few things; more focus on improving service delivery and the over all goal of achieving social economic transformation of our people. I thank the people of Omoro for giving me this mandate,” Oulanyah tweeted.
On Thursday, Oulanyah handed over the office of Deputy Speaker he has faithfully seved for the past ten years, a tenure that has earned him respect across Uganda’s political divide.
The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s top decision making body, the Central Executive Committee (CEC), is set to meet on Saturday to vet candidates for Speaker and Deputy.
CEC will then forward the name of the chosen flag bearer to the NRM Parliamentary caucus which will sit on Sunday at State House, Entebbe.
In 2016, during the same race with Rebecca Kadaga, Oulanyah accepted the CEC request for him to allow the former complete a 10 year tenure she asked for.
Kadaga then argued that her predecessor, Edward Ssekandi was allowed to be head of the Legislature for 10 years and that a precedent had been set which needed not to be changed, because of her.
She now finds herself, in a battle against her own agitations.
