Leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM party in Luweero are under a probe by the police over the the disappearance of Shs30m meant for campaigns in the just concluded polls.
According to police in the area, councilors have opened a fraud case against the NRM district leaders accusing them of taking money meant for them
Each of the 29 councilors who contested on the NRM ticket and were supposed to get Shs1m each for their poll agents did not receive the money despite it being released.
Abraham Byandala, NRM District Party Executive Treasurer, confirmed to the press that he signed the cheque, authorizing the release of the funds but was also shocked to learn that the councilors did not receive their money.
The councilors argue that failure to receive the money is partly to blame for their poor showing in the elections where the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party made gains.
On Thursday, Byandala appeared before detectives at Luwero Central Police Station to defend himself over the same fraud scandal.
He recorded a statement and presented bank statements to aid in the probe.
According to reports, Zenar Nasur, the NRM Vice Chairperson, wanted by the police on the same matter, says she withdrew the money and used it for mobilization for Local Government elections. Nasur adds that she got the circular after using the money and shared the accountability with the NRM secretariat.
