Bobi Wine Denied Access To His Lawyers, Expected In Court Today

The lawyer of the presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, Benjamin Katana, maintains that he has not been granted access to his client who is currently detained at Nalufenya Police in Jinja.

He however said that they are prepared to apply for bail if Kyagulanyi is arraigned in court.

“This case is shrouded in mystery. Even when we are here, we’ve not got any formal communication from Police or even the DPP,” Katana said on Friday morning from Iganga chief magistrate’s court where Kyagulanyi is expected to appear.

“We have not had an opportunity to interact with him. And effective representation requires that you speak to the person you are going to represent. All that and what has been happening from the time he was arrested and the time he has been in detention speaks to the illegitimacy of the entire process.”

Katana says Kyagulanyi as an accused person has the right to access his family, lawyer and doctor as enshrined in Article 28 of the Constitution of Uganda.

The lawyer refuted claims that he met his client on Thursday night. Instead, he says he only got to meet Muhamad Segirinya (also arrested) who had refused to write a statement in the absence of his lawyer.

“When I asked to see Hon Kyagulanyi, I was not allowed as nobody seemed to have the authority over the matter. That’s the mystery I’m talking about…. When he’s brought to court, we have prepared to apply for bail. We have the sureties, although some have been denied access to court,” he said.

“We have also worked on the paperwork in the event that he’s not produced in court considering the manner in which this case has been handled. We will proceed to apply for his unconditional release in court,” the lawyer added.
