The former Makindye East Member of parliament, Michael Mabikke has said that National Resistance Movement (NRM) has infiltrated National Unity platform (NUP) causing disorganisation in the party.
Appearing on NBS morning Breeze show today, Mabikke claimed that NUP is not doing due diligence on candidates adding that his opponent, who took the flag is a member of the ruling party.
Mabikke insisted that there are people who wear red during the day and go for NRM meetings at night.
He said the NUP vetting process is flawed and that the process has let Robert Kyagulanyi, the party president and the people who have been in the struggle down.
“Sam Mukaaku has been in the struggle from the beginning. Nabillah comes for one day from FDC, where she has been ejected and picks the NUP flag. Let us be fair,” he said.
He said although the party is operating under very hard circumstances but that should not be used as an excuse to make mistakes.
“The process of vetting should be open. The process is shabby with tribalism and cliques,” he said.
Mabikke noted that the vetting process was very lousy, and yet the party can do better saying that he got 45 out of 50 marks in the process and his opponent that was chosen can’t be more popular than him.
Although, the vetting process was unfair according to Mabikke, the former legislator claimed that he is still a card-carrying member of the party representing Makindye East.
“A Secretary General is not supposed to be here talking about vetting. That means there is a crisis. We need to deal with it very first and go to bigger things,” he said.
However, Lewis Rubongoya, the MUP Secretary General said there is no crisis in the party adding that candidates with issues should appeal other than spreading false information about the party.
“We would love to have a different kind of vetting, but the state won’t allow us to organise party primaries. We opted to have an executive board as provided for by our constitution to vet candidates,” he said.
