The president of National Unity Platform, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has accused a police officer of spraying pepper direct into his eyes.
The incident happened when Kyagulanyi had gone to attend a court session in Mbale, where he was appearing for a hearing of a case he filed against the police and others after he was barred from appearing on a local radio station on 8th August.
Through his lawyers, Kyagulanyi is demanding the court to stop police from further interference while carrying out his activities.
However, on his way back to Kampala, Police in Mbale used teargas to disperse Kyagulanyi’s supporters who had gathered to escort him.
The supporters were waiting for him outside court in Mbale.
“We attended court for the case we filed against the DPC, RPC, OC, RDC and the IGP who unlawfully denied us access to BCU FM on the 8th of this month. As usual, police unleashed brutal force, firing tear gas and live bullets at the innocent citizens,” he said.
Kyagulanyi said it was not right for police to fire tear gas and live bullets at innocent citizens who stood by the roadside to show solidarity.
“Police Officer ASP Asiimwe Abraham actually came to my car window and sprayed pepper spray direct into my eyes as he cursed me. I wondered the kind of police we have,” Kyagulanyi added.
He praised the people who stood by the roadside and waited to wave to them all the way from Mbale to Jinja.
The court adjourned the case to 26th August 2020.
