Former Minister of Ethics and Integrity Miria Rukoza Koburunga Matembe has revealed that it’s a calling from God for her to represent the elderly in parliament.
She said that this calling is like for Moses in the bible who was sent to rescue and deliver the Israelites to the promised land.
“For 40 years, he was in the desert, me I have been there for 13 years and now God’s calling is here; come and offer yourself,” said Matembe in an interview with a local TV station.
She further said that she has been talking to several old people and many have been with problems inflicted on the by their kids and relatives yet thy have no one to speak for them.
She promised ton represent their needs in Parliament.
“Elderly people should get insurance; they should be categorized according to vulnerability such that they can get assistance.”
Matemebe is the second person to declare her desire to represent the elderly in parliament after the 81-year-old former ICT Minister Aggrey Awori declared his bid.
This website understands that a week ago, MPs created five Parliamentary seats for elderly persons, one of which was ring-fenced for women.
Every region including Central, Eastern, Northern and Western will each have a representative elected by the Elders’ Council constituting all the districts in a particular region, while the National Female MP for the elderly will be elected by the National Elders’ Council constituting delegates from all the regions.
