Flamboyant city socialite Suleiman Kabangala Mbuga, who is popularly known as SK Mbuga, could be out of jail but not a free man yet.
Mbuga returned to Uganda over the weekend from Sweden where he is facing gold fraud charges together with his wife Jalia Birungi Chebet.
The couple allegedly fleeced over 50 million Kronor (about Shs23Bn) from Birungi’s Muzungu pensioner identified as Stein Heiso while purporting to sell him gold.
Mbuga, after hiding for years, was arrested early last year in Dubai, before being extradited to Sweden, where he has been languishing in jail, until he was released last week.
However, our snoops reveal that the case is not yet over.
We have established that what temporarily got Mbuga off the noose was that while in Court, he denied knowing his wife Birungi and prosecution asked court for time to bring enough evidence linking the two to each other.
Snoops say that was the reason why Birungi didn’t appear at fore front recently.
She wasn’t even among the people who welcomed him at Entebbe Airport, for fear that Interpol spies could have been around watching her.
But we have learnt that fresh investigations are underway for court prosecutors to prove that Mbuga and Vivian Chebet Birungi know each other, after which they will both be netted.
We hear investigators are using a video clip of Birungi at one of the local TV stations talking about her marriage with Mbuga, which they will use to pin both of them in the fresh investigations.
The reason why court wants prosecution to link Mbuga to Birungi is that while in court Heisoo, the victim of the scam pinned Birungi as the person who conned the money, not Mbuga.
The onus is now on Heisoo and his lawyers to prove that indeed Mbuga and Birungi are acquaintances.
