President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the late Mzee Ochwo Obonyo, commending him for supporting the struggle against bad leadership in Uganda.

“I have come here to pay tribute and salute late Obonyo’s contribution to our liberation struggle,” said President Museveni (today Saturday), as he visited the home of his fallen comrade in Midodo Village, Rubongi Sub-County, in Eastern Uganda’s Tororo District.

The President, who visited Obonyo’s home after presiding over the 33rd NRM Liberation Day Anniversary celebrations, laid a wreath on Obonyo’s grave before meeting the family privately.

Obonyo, born on March 1, 1934, was a teacher before turning to farming.

In 1971, he became a collaborator and supporter of FRONASA, helping recruit members into the rebel outfit.

Obonyo, who passed on last week, is survived by 15 children and 38 grandchildren.

President Museveni, who was accompanied by the First Lady Janet Museveni, said Obonyo was not just resourceful in the struggle but had also become a good example for the population in Tororo by becoming a successful farmer.

“He grew mangoes and coffee extensively, disproving claims by some that the soil in Budama was barren,” said the President. “Obonyo’s successful farm proved that the soil was not a problem but our mindsets.”

The President, who described Obonyo as “responsible”, also saluted him for emphasizing education and seeing all his 15 children through school. He encouraged the residents gathered in the home to emulate late Obonyo.

Milwen Owaro, one of Obonyo’s children, thanked President Museveni for visiting their home. “We are moved by the President’s respect for our father.

President Museveni is indeed humble man and honest. He never forgets his colleagues. We are elated by his visit,” he said.
