UBC to Appeal Kizza Besigye’s Shs80million court award

Through their lawyer, Kiryowa Kiwanuka Uganda Broadcasting Corporation is set to dispute Shs80millon awarded to FDC icon Dr Kizza Besigye by the High court.

This website understands that in February 2018, High court judge Margret Oguli-Oumo ruled in favour of Dr Kizza Besigye in a case where he faulted UBC for not meeting their contractual obligations by refusing to run Besigye’s 2011 presidential campaign adverts.

In 2012, Besigye dragged UBC and its then Managing Director Edward Musinguzi to court and demanded to be compensated for the loss incurred.

UBC later refunded Shs21million that was meant for the advert messages but Justice Oguli ruled that his equal rights to enjoy media as a presidential candidate were violated and directed UBC to pay him Shs80million in damages.

Upon receiving the message of being awarded Shs80million in damages, Besigye said that;

“Returned from abroad to good news! Judgment in my favour Vs Uganda Broadcasting Corporation for refusing to air our adverts &denying me airtime in 2011 presidential elections! Awarded 80m in general damages and costs. Great precedence!”

“Orders were for costs of the suit plus Shs 80m damages and to ensure equal treatment to all candidates. UBC gave Candidate M7 90% of airtime coverage Vs all other candidates combined!”
