Kayihura Moves to Detain Suspects for More than 48hours

1 Mins read

Inspector General of Police General Kale Kayihura has again called upon MPs to amend the constitution and allow police to detain suspects for more than 48hours.

“And these criminals, when you release them on bond, they disappear and you will never see them. We are facing this problem and I really want to call upon this committee to really consider a debate on Criminal justice system as inherited from the president,” Kayihura told the parliamentary committee on defence and internal affairs.

Kayihura further said that he is working with the president and the Chief Justice on this issue.

“The president has instructed us to compile all these cases and he takes it up with the Chief Justice,” said Kayihura.

This website understands that Museveni has been calling for the amendment of the 48-hour rule, saying that sometimes the courts may release the suspect yet police could be compiling the evidence against them.

But the opposition says the regime may use such a law to persecute its political opponents.
