Police in Kasese District are investigating an overnight attack on Bugoye Sub-County Police Station in which a suspected attacker was shot dead after a group armed with pangas attempted to seize a police officer’s firearm.
The incident occurred at about 2:00am on Thursday, October 1, 2026, in Bugoye Sub-County, according to police.
Preliminary information indicates that a group of about six people armed with pangas attacked the police station and targeted the officer who was on duty.
The attackers reportedly attempted to disarm the officer and take his firearm, prompting him to resist.
During the confrontation, the officer fired at the attackers, shooting one of them in the leg.
The injured suspect managed to flee from the scene, but was later found dead a short distance from the police station.
Police said the identity of the deceased had not yet been established by the time of the update.
Four suspects have, however, been arrested in connection with the attack. They have been identified as Irumba Simon, Kiiza Abson, Kadama George and Baluku Lenaxi.
A panga believed to have been used during the attack was recovered at the scene.
The deceased’s body was taken to the mortuary for a postmortem examination as detectives continue efforts to establish his identity and determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
Police are also pursuing other suspects who fled the scene and are working to establish the motive behind the attack on the police facility.
Authorities have appealed to members of the public with information that could help identify or locate the suspects still at large to report to the nearest police station.
Residents have also been urged to report any suspicious activity that could be connected to the incident as investigations continue.
The attack comes amid continued security concerns over attempts to target police facilities and officers, with police saying they remain alert and prepared to respond to threats against their installations.
