The murder case arising from the death of national rugby player Sydney Gongodyo has been adjourned to July 23, 2026, after the State informed the court that investigations into the killing are still ongoing and more suspects are being pursued.
During the latest court appearance, prosecutors told the court that several suspects had already been arrested in connection with the case. However, forensic findings have reportedly complicated the investigations after indicating that some of the individuals initially arrested did not match evidence collected from the scene and other investigative leads.
The development means detectives are continuing to widen their probe into the circumstances surrounding the brutal killing of the Rugby Cranes player, whose death sparked national outrage and renewed debate over mob justice in Uganda.
Isaac Kapalaga Kimeze, counsel holding a watching brief for the Uganda Rugby Union, told journalists after the court session that the rugby governing body remains actively involved in efforts to ensure justice is served.
“We are working closely with the police to support ongoing investigations and facilitate the arrest of additional suspects linked to the case,” Kimeze said.
The case stems from the June 5 killing of Gongodyo, a forward for Uganda’s national rugby team, the Rugby Cranes, and a player for Stanbic Black Pirates Rugby Club. According to police investigations, the 27-year-old was allegedly attacked by a mob along Upper Naguru East Road in Kampala after being accused of snatching a woman’s handbag. He was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.
The incident sent shockwaves through Uganda’s sporting fraternity, with players, fans and sports administrators condemning the attack and demanding swift justice. Uganda Rugby Union officials described his death as a major loss to the sport, while several rugby activities were disrupted as the community mourned one of its promising talents.
The investigation has evolved significantly since the immediate aftermath of the incident. Police initially announced the arrest of three suspects as they sought to establish the circumstances that led to Gongodyo’s death. The suspects were identified as Noordin Ssebagala, Roden Ayebazibwe and Juliet Namukose. Authorities indicated at the time that more arrests were expected as detectives pieced together evidence from witnesses and video footage.
Subsequently, four other suspects were formally charged before the City Hall Magistrate’s Court with murder. The accused — Obed Mugwisa, Elly Mondoni, Joseph Owino and Henry Kabugo — were remanded after being informed of the charges. Because murder is a capital offence, they were not allowed to enter pleas, with the matter expected to be tried by the High Court once investigations are completed.
Prosecutors have consistently maintained that other suspects remain at large and that police are actively searching for them. The latest adjournment appears aimed at giving investigators additional time to analyze forensic evidence, verify the involvement of those already arrested and track down other individuals believed to have participated in the fatal attack.
The revelation that some arrested individuals may not match forensic evidence is likely to raise fresh questions about the complexity of the investigation and the challenge of identifying all those responsible in cases involving large crowds. It also underscores the increasing role of forensic science in criminal investigations, particularly in incidents where multiple suspects are implicated.
Gongodyo’s death has become one of the most high-profile mob justice cases in recent years. Human rights advocates and law enforcement agencies have repeatedly warned against mob action, arguing that it undermines the rule of law and can lead to the killing of innocent people before proper investigations are conducted.
As the case returns to court on July 23, attention will be focused on whether investigators will have completed their inquiries, identified additional suspects and clarified the forensic evidence that prosecutors say is reshaping aspects of the case.
For Gongodyo’s family, teammates and the wider rugby fraternity, the adjournment means a longer wait for answers in a case that has gripped the nation and reignited calls for tougher action against mob justice.
