A powerful joint security taskforce has dramatically widened its crackdown on outgoing Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, storming and sealing off her luxury residences in Kigo and Ntinda in an operation that has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s political establishment.
The latest coordinated raids — executed by heavily armed operatives drawn from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), and intelligence agencies — mark a significant escalation in what is fast turning into one of the most explosive high-level corruption probes in recent political history.
The elite security deployment comes only days after security operatives mounted a similar operation at Among’s upscale Nakasero residence, signaling that investigators are now pursuing a far-reaching investigation targeting the former Speaker’s financial empire, political networks, and alleged accumulation of unexplained wealth.
Witnesses described scenes of intense security presence at both the Ntinda and Kigo properties as operatives sealed off access roads, erected tight perimeters, and blocked all movement in and out of the residences. Residents in the affluent lakeside suburb of Kigo reported seeing military vehicles and plain-clothed intelligence officers combing through the property for several hours.
Sources familiar with the operation say investigators are hunting for critical evidence linked to allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, money laundering, and abuse of office during Among’s tenure as Speaker of Parliament.
Highly placed security insiders revealed that forensic investigators are specifically targeting procurement files, bank transaction records, asset ownership documents, and confidential financial communications believed to be tied to multi-billion-shilling parliamentary transactions and politically connected beneficiaries.
The sweeping operation follows mounting public pressure and scrutiny over Among’s lavish lifestyle and rapid accumulation of wealth, which has dominated public debate in recent months. Particular attention has centered on her acquisition of luxury assets, including an expensive Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a symbol that critics say epitomized the excesses of political power and unchecked public spending.
The investigations reportedly intensified after a petition was submitted to the Inspector General of Government (IGG), Aisha Batala Naluzze, demanding a thorough audit of Among’s wealth declarations and sources of income.
Security sources further indicate that investigators are widening the dragnet beyond Among herself, examining suspected financial networks involving parliamentary officials, political mobilisers, and individuals believed to have benefited from questionable financial dealings linked to Parliament.
The raids come at a politically volatile moment — just days after Members of Parliament were sworn in for the 12th Parliament and ahead of the highly anticipated Speaker of Parliament election scheduled for May 25.
Political pressure on Among has intensified sharply in recent weeks following the withdrawal of support from influential political pressure groups and growing backing for rival Speaker candidates, including Budama West Central MP Jacob Marksons Oboth, commonly known as Jacob Oboth-Oboth.
The expanding investigations now threaten to overshadow the leadership contest and could dramatically reshape the balance of power within Parliament.
Investigators are understood to be analyzing materials and electronic devices retrieved from the Nakasero, Ntinda, and Kigo properties, while preparations are reportedly underway for additional searches targeting Among’s parliamentary offices and her country home in Bukedea District.
Sources close to the investigations say prosecutors and intelligence teams are racing to finalize case files, with possible court action expected once the forensic review is completed.
As the operation deepens, the dramatic security siege around one of Uganda’s most powerful political figures signals a potentially defining moment in the country’s anti-corruption fight — and a stunning fall from grace for a politician who until recently stood at the pinnacle of state power.
