This Easter, Uganda made history—and the digital world took notice.
Millions of Ugandans turned to Scripture in unprecedented numbers, catapulting the YouVersion Bible App to record-breaking engagement levels across Sub-Saharan Africa and the globe.
For many, it wasn’t just a spiritual moment; it was a digital awakening, reflecting the nation’s enduring motto: “FOR GOD & MY COUNTRY.”
On Easter Sunday alone, more than 21.6 million people globally engaged with the Bible, making it the highest-engagement day in YouVersion history.
Across Holy Week, an average of 18.7 million people daily immersed themselves in Scripture, with 2026 now boasting all ten of the app’s historically highest engagement days.
Uganda led the charge in Africa, alongside Tanzania and Ethiopia, while South Africans peaked on Good Friday, and Kenyans flocked to the app on Palm Sunday.
“The surge we saw this Easter is extraordinary,” said Joseph Gachira, YouVersion’s Kenya Hub Leader.
“It’s a reflection of a continent-wide hunger for God’s Word. People are looking for guidance, encouragement, and hope, and Easter is the perfect moment to connect with Scripture. Seeing millions across Africa turn to the Bible at once is awe-inspiring.”
In Uganda, the Bible App Lite, designed for offline use, dominated download charts, ranking number one in the country on Easter Sunday.
Nine African nations, including Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, saw the same phenomenon. Even in areas with limited internet access, Ugandans found a way to connect with Scripture, proving that faith can thrive in the digital era.
Globally, Holy Week engagement surged by 15% compared to last year, with Sub-Saharan Africa leading all regions with 37% growth, while Latin America rose 22%.
These numbers represent millions of people seeking God’s Word, reflecting a spiritual movement that transcends borders, technology, and denominations.
The Easter reading trends highlight the depth of this engagement. This year, the most-read verse across African countries was Matthew 28:6, “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.”
Last year, John 15:13 topped the charts, showing how devotion adapts to the story of the season. The verses, both filled with love, hope, and sacrifice, mirror the spiritual heartbeat of the continent this Holy Week.
YouVersion’s platform offers access to more than 2,400 languages and 3,750 translations, along with immersive video content and Bible Plans from partners such as The Chosen, BibleProject, and the Museum of the Bible.
These features brought the Easter story to life for millions, making Scripture more accessible and engaging than ever.
Bobby Gruenewald, YouVersion Founder and CEO, said: “Easter has always been one of the highest days for Bible engagement.
This year’s record-breaking numbers are a testament to the growing global interest in God’s Word. Easter reminds us of Jesus’ sacrifice and love, and it’s encouraging to see millions of people across Africa and the world celebrating that message by engaging with Scripture.”
The phenomenon wasn’t limited to major cities. In rural Uganda, schoolchildren, farmers, and families in remote villages accessed Bible content through mobile devices, offline apps, and community sharing, demonstrating the power of technology to unite faith and culture.
Digital devotionals, Bible reading plans, and video series allowed millions to participate in a collective spiritual experience, reinforcing community and personal faith simultaneously.
Easter 2026 will be remembered as more than a religious holiday. It has become a digital spiritual movement, as Ugandans and Africans at large broke records, inspired one another, and celebrated the resurrection of Jesus in a way that blends tradition with modern technology.
The surge in engagement embodies the essence of Uganda’s national ethos: faith, patriotism, and connection to God’s Word.
As millions continue to read, share, and discuss Scripture, the historic numbers from Easter 2026 are a reminder: faith is not just alive—it is thriving, evolving, and going viral. Uganda’s record-breaking Bible engagement is a powerful symbol of hope, love, and devotion in a world where technology meets spirituality like never before.
