The Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP), David Lewis Rubongoya, has announced plans to legally challenge the election of Hajjat Minsa Kabanda as Member of Parliament for Kampala Central Division, citing alleged irregularities during the polling process.
Kabanda, who stood on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, was declared winner of the January 15 parliamentary election after securing 22,332 votes, defeating Rubongoya who garnered 18,242 votes—a difference of 4,090 votes.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, Rubongoya accused his opponent of interfering with the electoral process, claiming the final outcome did not reflect the will of voters.
According to Rubongoya, he emerged victorious in 17 of the 20 parishes within Kampala Central but alleges that the results were manipulated in favor of Kabanda. He further claimed that security personnel were involved in irregular activities at certain polling stations, including Nakasero State House and Summit View, where votes were allegedly inflated.
He also stated that some of his polling agents were denied access to polling stations, limiting their ability to observe and verify the voting process.
Rubongoya said he intends to file an election petition to formally challenge the results, noting that while a favorable ruling is not guaranteed, it is important that the alleged violations are officially documented.
“Our responsibility is to present the evidence so that the record reflects what truly happened,” he said.
