What began as one of Uganda’s most admired young-love stories has now unraveled into a public storm of accusations, counter-accusations, and heartbreaking revelations. The once-inseparable couple, Sasha Ferguson and journalist Canary Mugume who wed in a glamorous ceremony in May 2021 after nearly 10 years together, have officially gone their separate ways. And now, both former partners are exposing what they describe as years of violence and emotional turmoil behind their picture-perfect marriage.
A Decade of Love That Turned Into a War Zone
Sasha and Canary were once seen as the modern Ugandan “it-couple.” Their relationship began in their youth and eventually blossomed into a long-term romance that culminated in a well-publicized wedding. The two welcomed children together and, for years, curated an image of stability and success.
But in her explosive Instagram confession, Sasha revealed that the reality behind closed doors was far different.
Sasha: “I Survived Beatings, Fear & Silence”
In a lengthy emotional statement, Sasha described years of alleged physical and psychological abuse. Her message painted a picture of a woman trapped in a violent cycle while being pressured to keep quiet for the sake of her husband’s public image.
“Every inner person I ran to for help told me to sssshhh… someone else’s image was more at stake than my life.”
According to Sasha, she endured repeated violence, isolation, and gaslighting. At one point, she says she was told: “People love me, no one is going to believe you.”
After losing her father earlier this year, she says she fled with only her children, their clothes, and a few belongings leaving behind everything else “for peace.”

Sasha says she has rebuilt her life from scratch and wants nothing more than healing and stability for her children.
She also urged people to stop attacking or questioning the father of her kids: “We are both on different life journeys… please don’t judge him. No one is a saint.”

Canary Fires Back: “Men Are Abused Too, And I Was a Victim”
In a dramatic twist, Canary broke his silence with a long rebuttal shared on his social media pages. The celebrated journalist insisted he was also a victim, claiming Sasha had anger issues and had physically assaulted him.
“I am part of the unreported statistics of men who experience domestic violence… I restrained myself immensely despite all provocations.”
He alleges he has photographic evidence of himself bleeding after an assault and says close friends and family were aware of what he went through.
The Fight For Their Children
Canary also dismissed claims that he is an absentee father, insisting he has only been allowed to see his children once in 10 months, despite sending monthly financial support.
He dropped a bombshell, revealing that:
- He won custody in court.
- Authorities refused to enforce the ruling.
- He alleges Sasha “deserted the children in a locked apartment with a maid” while traveling abroad.
“I have been denied access to my children since January. I have tried, gone to court, begged—nothing. This is the last time I address this. Let me heal.”
However, in another twist of events, Sasha’s lawyer, Roger Mugabi also came out and rubbished Canary’s submission. “Canary you lying bastard. I represented your traumatized wife, as her lawyer, in that custody application and your application was dismissed,” he shot back.
A Marriage in Ruins, And a Nation Divided
Ugandans online are sharply split. Team Sasha sees her as a survivor who finally found the strength to walk away from a violent marriage while Team Canary believes he is breaking the silence for abused men who are often mocked, ignored, or dismissed.
Domestic violence activists say both sides may be telling their own painful truths, reminding the public that:
- Abuse can happen to anyone.
- Men can be victims too.
- Co-parenting wars often intensify allegations.
- And no one outside the home ever knows the full story.
What’s Next For The Former Power Couple?
Sasha says she wants peace, privacy, and space to raise her children, while Canary says he wants healing, justice, and access to his kids.
But one thing remains clear, the beautifully curated love story that once inspired thousands has shattered, and the pieces have fallen into a very public arena.
