Mobile money in Uganda has long been associated with sending and receiving cash quickly. MTN’s MoMo has played a central role in shaping that culture. With the launch of the new MoMo App, the service now steps into a new phase. The app has been redesigned to function as a comprehensive financial platform that helps users manage daily payments while also connecting them to a wider set of financial tools.

The most noticeable changes are in the experience of using the app. The new version introduces biometric login, allowing customers to unlock with a fingerprint or face scan. This makes quick payments possible in fast moving settings such as bars or events where convenience matters most. The app also allows a clear view of recent activity, making it possible to track transactions going back a month without needing to request a statement. That is a major improvement from the previous version which only showed 48 hours of activity.

The features go well beyond usability. Customers can pay bills for utilities, school fees, and taxes directly from the app. When cash runs short, MoMo Advance provides instant access to extra funds. The introduction of the Virtual MoMo Card has opened the door to the global digital economy, making it possible to pay for subscriptions, shop online, and complete international transactions directly from the wallet. The app also now supports MoMo Ticketing, which allows users to buy event tickets from anywhere and receive a QR code by email. At the venue, the code is scanned at the gate, removing the need for physical tickets and making entry smoother.

Other updates reflect everyday habits. People can save their favorite contacts and merchants, removing the need to repeatedly enter phone numbers or merchant IDs. Transactions can be scheduled to go through automatically, ensuring bills and subscriptions are settled on time. Requests for money can be sent with a QR code that contains the exact amount needed, and the app instantly generates digital receipts that can be shared as proof of payment. For a limited period, transfers made on weekends are also free, encouraging more people to adopt the app for personal and family payments.

The overall experience has been designed with both convenience and security in mind. The interface is smoother, fraud detection has been strengthened, and the design places every feature in easy reach. Together these changes make the app an everyday companion, from buying a drink at a local bar to paying school fees or completing an online purchase.

The launch of this app reflects a wider change across Africa where mobile money is expanding into full digital financial platforms. The new MoMo App is part of that shift. It is no longer simply a way to move money. It is becoming the hub for savings, credit, commerce, and payments that reach beyond borders.

By bringing together these services in one place, MTN has positioned MoMo as a partner in financial life. It is a platform that meets the needs of the present while also laying the foundation for the future of digital finance in Uganda.
