The Democratic Party (DP) yesterday, convened at the Serena Hotel in Kampala to officially launch the manifesto of Beatrice Mao, the party’s flag bearer for the Kampala Lord Mayor race.
Mao, who was barred from contesting in the 2021 elections due to voter registration concerns, unveiled her development agenda for the capital, pledging reforms centered on universal healthcare, green innovations, urban farming, tourism growth, and improved land and market governance. She described her candidacy as a renewed chance to deliver transformative leadership for Kampala.
Highlighting Kampala’s pivotal role as Uganda’s economic engine—contributing over 30% of the national GDP—Mao presented a four-point vision for the city’s future:
- A well-governed city with adequate authority and resources to address its challenges.
- A dynamic and livable city that meets the demands of its growing youthful population.
- A productive city that attracts investment and expands opportunities for all residents.
- A sociable city that fosters unity, culture, and community pride.
Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Hon. Norbert Mao, who is also Beatrice’s husband, rallied support at the event, praising her as a visionary leader capable of transforming Kampala into a modern, digital, and inclusive capital.
Her candidacy has energized DP structures across the city, with posters and mobilization efforts already in full swing. Mao emerged as the party’s standard bearer after John Bosco Kamoga stepped down in her favor.
She enters a highly competitive race, facing off against seasoned contenders, including former Nakawa East legislator Eng. Ronald Balimwezo, who is contesting on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
