Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has thrown open the starting gates to the world, inviting diplomats, tourists, and sports enthusiasts to lace up for the Fourth Edition of the Tusker Lite Rwenzori Marathon in Kasese.
In a high-energy launch at the Ministry’s headquarters, Permanent Secretary Vincent Bagiire Waiswa declared the event a “powerful platform” for boosting Uganda’s global influence, driving economic growth, and showcasing the country’s stunning natural beauty.
The Ministry struck a deal with organizers in February, dispatching embassies and missions worldwide to market the race as a flagship sports tourism event. The push has already reached Washington D.C., Pretoria, Dar es Salaam, Guangzhou, Arusha, Nairobi, Mombasa, and the UAE.
Marathon founder Amos Wekesa said the race has transformed Kasese from a region once marked by insecurity into a bustling hub for global runners, nature lovers, and investors. With 34 countries represented and hotel bookings in Kasese already topping 75%, he called the event “a game-changer” for the region.
As Uganda’s only internationally certified marathon, the Rwenzori race offers a breathtaking course past the snow-capped Rwenzoris, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Lake George, and the Equator—while doubling as a call to action on climate change and conservation.
The Ministry urged Ugandans and visitors alike to head to Kasese—whether to run, cheer, or simply soak in “a celebration of endurance, unity, and Uganda’s unmatched beauty.”
