Gen. Moses Ali, Seeks Parliamentary Comeback After Securing NRM Nomination

1 Mins read

The Second Deputy Prime Minister and long-serving statesman, Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, has confirmed his intent to return to Parliament after securing the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party nomination to contest for the Adjumani West County seat in the 2026 general elections.

At 86, Gen. Ali remains one of the most prominent and enduring figures in Ugandan politics. He submitted his nomination forms on Tuesday, June 4, in a symbolic gesture that saw him receive and return the documents from the window of his vehicle—underscoring both his age and stature.

The NRM Secretariat formally handed over the nomination forms to him earlier in June. His re-entry into active politics was met with enthusiasm from local supporters, who view him as a pillar of stability and continuity in the region.

Gen. Ali currently serves as the Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament. He has represented East Moyo County in Adjumani District since 2011 and previously held several top government positions, including First Deputy Prime Minister (2016–2021) and Third Deputy Prime Minister (2011–2016).

His political legacy stretches back decades, tracing to his involvement in the 1971 coup that brought Idi Amin to power. During Amin’s regime, he served in key roles, including as Minister of Finance. Following years of exile and a return to public life, Gen. Ali became a senior figure in the post-Amin political landscape, aligning himself with the NRM and earning a reputation as a skilled negotiator and loyal party cadre.

Despite his advanced age, Gen. Ali’s re-entry into the 2026 parliamentary race signals both his strong personal commitment and the NRM’s continued confidence in his leadership.

Supporters in Adjumani describe him as a seasoned and influential leader whose wealth of experience remains critical to both constituency and national interests.

As the country gears up for a competitive 2026 election season, Gen. Ali’s bid stands out as a powerful reminder of Uganda’s political continuity—rooted in its past but navigating the challenges of the future.
