Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has called on National Resistance Movement (NRM) delegates in the Busoga sub-region to back her bid for Second National Vice Chairperson in the party’s upcoming Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections, pledging to prioritize the region’s development and fight poverty.
Among, who spent the day meeting party delegates in Bugiri and Iganga districts, emphasized that her campaign is anchored in addressing the socio-economic challenges facing Busoga. She stated that her candidacy is not based on personal ambition, but rather a desire to uplift the historically marginalized sub-region.
“We should be united. Nobody should intimidate you. I am here for the good of Busoga. We shall fight poverty together,” Among told party leaders gathered in Bugiri. The meeting drew NRM delegates from Bugiri, Mayuge, Namayingo, and Namutumba districts.
She also revealed plans to expand educational opportunities in the area, announcing that her Bukedea Comprehensive School will soon open a branch in Busoga. Among’s campaign comes amid growing calls for development in the region, which continues to lag behind in key socio-economic indicators.
Among was accompanied by Capt. Mike Mukula, the incumbent NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, who is also seeking reelection. Mukula urged delegates to elect leaders with proven experience, warning against entrusting the party’s top decision-making body to newcomers.
“NRM is undergoing a foundational transformation. The President needs strong leaders. Don’t send him novices,” Mukula said.
The duo received a warm welcome from party supporters, with chants, cheers, and traditional ululations marking their arrival.
In Iganga, Among met with delegates from Iganga, Kaliro, Bugweri, Jinja, and Luuka districts. She highlighted her legislative achievements as Speaker, including the recent passage of the Sugar Amendment Bill, which she said would streamline the sugar industry — a key economic sector for Busoga.
She also announced that Busoga University, which had been closed, will officially reopen in August as a public university. “Busoga has been yearning for a public university. I am happy to report that Busoga University shall officially reopen in August,” she said.
Among’s campaign received endorsements from several area MPs, including Solomon Silwanyi (Bukhooli Central), Baka Mugabi (Bukhooli South), Milton Muwuma (Kigulu South), Kauma Saida Alibawo (Iganga Woman MP), Iddi Isabirye (Bunya South), and Sanon Bwire (Bulamogi County), all of whom praised her commitment to the region.
Busoga, often considered a key political bloc, is expected to play a critical role in determining outcomes of the NRM’s internal elections. Among’s focus on grassroots development, unity, and her record in national leadership appear to have resonated strongly with the delegates.
