All Eyes on Mugerwa as Kyagwe Bets Big on Masaza Cup G

1 Mins read

With the Masaza Cup drawing near, the pressure is mounting—not just on the players, but squarely on the shoulders of celebrated coach Simon Peter Mugerwa, who has now been entrusted with delivering long-awaited glory to Kyagwe County.

Kyagwe made headlines this week with the formal unveiling of Mugerwa, a three-time Masaza Cup champion, as the new head coach. Known for his tactical brilliance and unmatched record in the tournament, Mugerwa’s appointment is being viewed as a high-stakes gamble by the county’s leadership.

At a ceremonial welcome held at the Kyagwe County Headquarters in Mukono Municipality, the mood was a mix of celebration and clear-eyed ambition. The County Chief (Sekiboobo), Owek. Vincent Matovu, did not mince words in setting expectations.

“We didn’t bring him here just to participate. We want the trophy, and we are providing all the support necessary to achieve that,” Matovu declared, placing the weight of a county’s dreams squarely on Mugerwa’s shoulders.

For Mugerwa, who has lifted the prestigious cup with multiple counties, the challenge is familiar—but no less daunting.

“This is not just my job—it’s our collective mission. I am committed, but it will take everyone working together to make it happen,” Mugerwa said, urging unity and focus.

Team Chairperson Stephen Serubula, who led the recruitment push, said Mugerwa’s arrival is a statement of intent. “We’re not here to build for the future—we’re here to win now.”

While fans greeted the announcement with euphoria and renewed hope, insiders say Mugerwa faces intense pressure to turn that hope into silverware. Kyagwe has long been seen as a county with potential that never quite materialized on the grand stage. Now, with a proven winner at the helm, failure is not an option.

With every training session and match, all eyes will be on Mugerwa—not just to improve the team’s performance, but to end Kyagwe’s title drought. The question remains: Can the man with three titles deliver a fourth under the most demanding circumstances yet?.
