UPDF Suspends Military Cooperation with Germany Over Alleged Subversive Activities by Ambassador

1 Mins read

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced the immediate suspension of all defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany, citing alleged subversive conduct by the German Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Mathias Schauer.

In a statement issued Monday, the UPDF said the decision follows what it termed “credible intelligence reports” indicating that Ambassador Schauer is actively involved in activities considered hostile to the Ugandan government.

“The current German Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Mathias Schauer, is actively engaged in subversive activities in the country,” the statement read. “The suspension will remain in force until the full resolution of the matter of the Ambassador’s involvement with hostile pseudo political-military forces operating in the country.”

While the UPDF did not disclose specific details regarding the alleged activities or the intelligence on which the decision is based, the move marks a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between Uganda and one of its key European partners.

Germany has been a long-standing supporter of Uganda’s development and security sectors, including cooperation on peacekeeping training, humanitarian operations, and governance reforms.

As of press time, the German Embassy in Kampala had not issued a public response to the allegations or the suspension.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uganda has also remained silent on the matter, raising questions among diplomatic observers about the coordination between Uganda’s military and civilian foreign affairs apparatus.
