The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has postponed internal elections in four areas ahead of Friday’s scheduled nationwide polls to elect party structures at the District and City levels.
According to a statement issued by NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, the elections have been suspended in the Bunyoro sub-region, Luweero, Nakasongola, Nakaseke, Arua City, and Amolatar District due to various logistical and administrative reasons.
The commission cited President Yoweri Museveni’s official visit to the Bunyoro sub-region and the districts of Luweero, Nakasongola, and Nakaseke as the reason for suspending elections in those areas. The President’s tour has been prioritized, with local party activities rescheduled to accommodate the Head of State’s engagements.
In Arua City, elections were halted following a petition related to Ayivu, which is under review. Meanwhile, in Amolatar District, the process was suspended after the electoral body reported that delegates could not be traced, compromising the legitimacy and inclusiveness of the vote.
Dr. Odoi did not specify when elections in the affected areas would be held but affirmed the party’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and organized internal polls. The rest of the country will proceed with the scheduled elections for District and City party structures on Friday, May 23, 2025.
These elections are part of the NRM’s internal reorganization efforts ahead of the 2026 general elections and include the selection of leaders in the party’s mainstream and league positions.
