Former Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura, has been appointed Chairperson of the Planning and Development Committee at Ibanda University, marking a significant addition to the university’s leadership structure.

The appointment was announced during the inauguration of the university’s new Governing Council on Monday at AK Gardens Hotel in Ibanda Town. The council will oversee the institution’s strategic direction for the next four years.

Gen. Kayihura, who previously led Uganda’s national police force, brings a wealth of experience in security, national leadership, and strategic planning to the university. According to Lawrence Mucunguzi, the university’s Public Relations Officer, his expertise is expected to play a key role in steering the university’s physical and academic development.

“General Kayihura’s extensive background in national leadership, security, and strategic planning will be instrumental in guiding the university’s growth,” Mucunguzi said.

In his remarks at the inauguration, Gen. Kayihura expressed commitment to advancing the university’s mission.

“I am honored to serve in this capacity and contribute to the growth of an institution that stands for academic excellence and community transformation,” he said.

The Governing Council will be led by Dr. Clementia Mureembe, who was re-elected as Chairperson for another term. Dr. Mureembe pledged to continue building on the university’s progress.

“This is a moment of renewed commitment. Together with our dynamic team, we shall continue building a university that shapes future leaders,” she said.

Dr. John Busingye, Chairperson of the university’s Board of Directors, expressed optimism about the new council’s leadership.

“We are confident that the collective expertise of this new Governing Council, under the capable leadership of Dr. Mureembe and with Gen. Kayihura guiding our planning efforts, will greatly enhance the university’s vision of becoming a center of academic excellence and innovation,” Busingye stated.

Other members of the newly inaugurated council include academic, government, and cultural leaders such as Ms. Jovrine Kaliisa Kyomukama, Prof. Peter Kanyandago, Dr. Imelda Kemeza, and His Royal Highness Jude Mike Mudoma – Umukuuka III of Bugisu.

Founded in 2014, Ibanda University is one of Uganda’s emerging private higher education institutions, known for its emphasis on accessibility, innovation, and community-focused learning. The university hopes the strengthened leadership will help it reach new milestones in education and societal impact.
