Museveni Commissions Shs 53 Billion USMID-Funded Road Projects in Kasese

1 Mins read

President Museveni has officially commissioned road infrastructure projects worth Shs 53 billion in Kasese Municipality under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) program, signaling a significant stride in the region’s urban transformation.

The commissioned roads include Rwenzori Road, Bus Circular Road, 3rd Street, Kitalikubi Road, Park Rise, Stanley Road, Margarita Road, Rukidi III-Port Circular, Crescent Road, Mandela Road, Total Road, Mboghoyabo, and Lincoln Road.

The upgrades are expected to enhance transport efficiency, boost the municipality’s economy, and improve service delivery.

“These developments demonstrate that the NRM government is not about empty promises. We do what we say and say what we mean,” Museveni said during the commissioning.

In addition to the roads, the municipality has benefitted from modern drainage systems, green spaces to improve climate resilience, a solid waste management system with a new garbage truck, and trained urban management teams.

Museveni emphasized that sustainable development hinges on prioritization, discipline, and focusing on foundational elements such as security, infrastructure, and education.

“When we took over, even soldiers lived in grass-thatched huts. But we prioritized building a strong and equipped army,” the President noted, reiterating the NRM’s development philosophy of sequencing interventions to ensure long-term transformation.

Hon. Judith Nabakooba, Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, lauded Kasese for its effective implementation of the USMID program. She noted the municipality’s growth in local revenue from Shs 399 million to Shs 1.4 billion and the improved security and business vibrancy resulting from infrastructure improvements.

“These projects go far beyond roads. They represent a holistic shift in urban resilience, governance, and community empowerment,” Nabakooba said.

Kasese Municipality was recognized nationally for effective fund utilization, with Shs 49 billion of the total allocation directly invested in road construction. Mayor Chance Kahindo praised the government’s trust in the region and called for continued support in future development phases.

Present at the event were several high-ranking government officials, including Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa, Minister of ICT and National Guidance Chris Baryomunsi, and State Ministers Alice Kaboyo and Balaam Barugahara.

The USMID initiative, funded by the World Bank, aims to support urban infrastructure development across Uganda’s growing municipalities, with Kasese now positioned as one of its standout beneficiaries.
