The Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, has been elected unopposed as the Chairperson of the Women’s League in Apopong Parish.
The development was confirmed on Monday following the conclusion of the nomination and verification process, during which no other candidate expressed interest in the position.
Her unchallenged nomination has been interpreted by local leaders and supporters as a strong show of confidence in her leadership and commitment to grassroots development.
“We extend our warmest congratulations to Hon. Among on this well-deserved recognition and the trust placed in her to guide women’s affairs in Apopong Parish,” a local organizing committee statement read.
Among’s elevation to the parish-level leadership position adds to her growing profile as a key political figure in Uganda, where she currently serves as the head of the legislative arm of government.
Community members in Apopong have welcomed her unopposed election, citing her track record of supporting women’s empowerment initiatives and local development programs in Bukedea District.
“She has always championed women’s issues, from economic empowerment to education. Her leadership at this level will only strengthen those efforts,” said Sarah Akol, a resident of Apopong.
The Women’s League plays a critical role in mobilizing women at grassroots levels to participate in development activities, advocate for their rights, and engage in political processes. Among is expected to use her national experience to strengthen local structures and expand the reach of the league’s programs.
