Bebe Cool Sets the Record Straight: “I Didn’t Arrest Tems and Omah Lay… I Was Just a Convenient Scapegoat!”

Picture this: It’s 2021. Uganda is in lockdown, but the government has given a tiny window for parties with 200 people—because, you know, COVID only respects small crowds. Then, boom! Nigerian artists Omah Lay and Tems land in town for a concert, and Ugandan artists—who hadn’t seen a stage in over a year—are fuming.

To make matters worse, Omah Lay posts a picture of himself, happily vibing with a sea of Ugandan fans. That was like waving a red flag in front of a bunch of already frustrated local artists.

They took to social media like detectives, questioning why Nigerian stars were allowed to perform while they were stuck doing Instagram freestyles. The backlash snowballed, and before anyone could say “Afrobeats,” news broke: Omah Lay and Tems had been arrested.

But wait, the drama was just getting started.

Enter Bebe Cool, Uganda’s resident music superstar and walking controversy magnet. The internet, being the internet, decided he was the mastermind behind the arrests.

Even Tems, fresh out of jail, went on X (formerly Twitter, but we refuse to let it go) and pointed fingers at him. The Nigerians were furious, some Ugandans joined in blindly, and Bebe Cool suddenly found himself playing the role of Uganda’s most wanted… on social media, at least.

“Guys, I Was As Shocked As You!”

Fast forward to 2025, and Bebe Cool finally got the chance to set the record straight on the Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope Olajide. He revealed that not only did he NOT orchestrate the arrest, but he actually worked behind the scenes to free the Nigerian stars.

According to Bebe, he was deep in dreamland at around 3 AM when a friend called him. (You know it’s serious when someone calls you at 3 AM.) The message? “Bro, Omah Lay and Tems have been arrested!”

Half-asleep but now fully involved, Bebe started making calls like a man on a mission. By 6 AM, he was already at the police station, demanding answers.

“Why arrest the artists?” he asked. “They don’t control the crowd. The president allowed 200 people—are they supposed to be counting heads mid-performance?”

The Real Culprit: Miscommunication and a Show Promoter with Too Much Confidence

Now, if you think Bebe’s problems ended there, think again. Just as he was negotiating for their release, one of the event organizers saw him and, in a moment of pure desperation, threw him under the bus.

“That’s the guy! That’s the reason they are in prison!” the promoter allegedly yelled.

So now, instead of being the hero, Bebe Cool suddenly became the villain in a Nollywood-style plot twist.

To make things worse, just as he was making headway in the negotiations, he found out—via the internet—that the artists had been taken to court. Furious, he called the police chief:

“I just left! We were talking! Now you’re sending them to court behind my back?!”

The police, probably sweating at this point, blamed it on a promoter who was name-dropping her mother’s government connections. (Lesson of the day: Never underestimate an event promoter with “powerful” relatives.)

The Aftermath: Omah Lay Got It, Tems? Not So Much…

Despite the chaos, Bebe Cool managed to secure their release—no Nigerian diplomatic intervention needed. He even got a chance to explain everything to Omah Lay, who apparently understood.

Tems, on the other hand? Not so lucky.

“Omah Lay got it, but Tems was probably too traumatized to hear the full story,” Bebe admitted. So, naturally, when she got home, she let Twitter (sorry, X) do the talking. And, well, we all saw how that went.

What’s Next for Bebe Cool?

Despite the internet once turning him into a Ugandan villain, Bebe Cool is having an eventful 2025. He dropped his Bebe Cool List, released the video for his song Circumference, and is on a mission to elevate Ugandan music.

“This is a new journey,” he declared. “I encourage more East African artists to join me on this new dawn. That’s the motivation behind my new album—‘Break the Chains’.”

And just like that, Bebe Cool is back in the game.
