National Voter Registration Update Exercise Kicks Off Nationwide Ahead of 2026 General Election

2 Mins read

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially launched the National Voter Registration Update Exercise, marking a critical step in preparations for next year’s General Election.

Starting today, January 20, 2025, eligible voters across the country can visit designated update stations to ensure their information is accurately captured in the National Voters’ Register.

The exercise, spearheaded by EC Chairperson Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, was formally inaugurated at Kamwokya 2, located in Kampala Central Division.

Justice Byabakama emphasized the importance of citizen participation in the exercise, noting that it is fundamental to building a credible and inclusive voter register for the 2025/2026 electoral cycle.

Details of the Voter Registration Update Exercise

The update exercise will run daily from January 20 to February 10, 2025, including weekends, between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Citizens are encouraged to visit their local parish or ward update station to perform any of the following tasks:

  • Register as a voter: Individuals who have recently turned 18 or are eligible to vote for the first time can enroll.
  • Transfer polling stations: Voters who have moved residences can update their information to reflect their current location.
  • Verify or update voter details: Registered voters can confirm or amend their personal details to ensure accuracy.
  • Assign a polling station: First-time voters or those turning 18 will have the opportunity to designate their preferred polling location.

Justice Byabakama urged all eligible citizens to participate, reminding them to carry valid proof of identity or origin to facilitate the process.

Public Participation Encouraged

In a statement, Justice Byabakama said:

“This update exercise is a cornerstone of free and fair elections. By taking the time to verify and update your information, you play a vital role in strengthening democracy in Uganda.”

The Electoral Commission also launched an awareness campaign to educate citizens about the importance of the update exercise. Officials emphasized the inclusivity of the initiative, noting that it is accessible to all eligible voters, regardless of their location or prior voting history.

Ensuring Transparency and Accessibility

The Commission has set up multiple update stations nationwide to minimize logistical challenges. By extending operating hours to include weekends, the EC aims to ensure that even those with demanding schedules can participate.

Citizens who miss this registration update period may face limitations in participating in the forthcoming General Election.

Looking Ahead to 2025/2026 General Elections

The completion of the voter update exercise will pave the way for other key electoral activities, including candidate nominations and the campaign season.

With the countdown to the 2025 General Election underway, the EC is urging every eligible voter to take advantage of the exercise.

For more information, citizens are encouraged to contact their local EC office or visit the official EC website.
