The Ministry of Local Government (MoLG) has made significant strides in implementing its manifesto commitments, driving socio-economic transformation across the country. A recent status report highlights key achievements in infrastructure development, decentralization, and economic empowerment through the Parish Development Model (PDM).
Infrastructure and Service Delivery Improvements
To enhance service delivery, the government has rehabilitated several community access roads and bridges. Among these is the Oboko-Ywaya Road in Lamwo District, now fully completed with proper drainage systems, and the newly constructed Agoro Bridge, improving connectivity in the region. Additionally, the Alite Bridge in Nwoya District is under construction, promising better accessibility for local communities.
In a move to strengthen local infrastructure, the government has also procured road equipment worth UGX 34.6 billion for 14 districts, ensuring more efficient road maintenance and rehabilitation.
Economic Empowerment and Market Development
The government has operationalized key markets to boost local trade and economic activities. The Soroti City Main Market and Tororo City Market are now functional, providing vendors with modern facilities to enhance business operations.
In the agricultural sector, the government has invested in Agri-LED facilities and value-addition centers, aimed at boosting agro-industrialization. These facilities will help farmers enhance productivity and access better markets for their produce.
Success Stories from the Parish Development Model (PDM)
The PDM initiative has already transformed lives at the grassroots level. Mrs. Natukunda Allen, a beneficiary from Ibanda District, received UGX 1 million through the PDM Parish Revolving Fund. Her group, Banalongo Tumanyane Poultry Enterprise, comprising 25 women, has successfully established a poultry farm with potential for further growth.
Another beneficiary, Mrs. Atto Miriam, invested her UGX 1 million into pig farming, initially purchasing four pigs. Despite losing one, the remaining pigs have since reproduced, significantly expanding her livestock business.
Challenges and the Way Forward
While progress has been commendable, challenges such as inadequate funding, adverse weather conditions, and procurement delays have slowed down some projects. The government remains committed to addressing these hurdles to ensure timely and effective service delivery.
With continued investment in local governance, infrastructure, and economic programs, the Ministry of Local Government is driving tangible change, bringing Uganda closer to its vision of socio-economic transformation.
