URA Announces Auction of Overstayed Goods,  Vehicles at Mombasa Port

1 Mins read

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and the East African Community Customs Management Act 2004, as amended, the Commissioner Customs has called upon owners of motor vehicles at Mombasa Port, which have exceeded their statutory clearance period, to expedite clearance within 30 days from the date of the notice’s first publication.

Failure to comply within this period will result in the disposal of these goods through public auction.

The notice outlines the process for clearing overstayed goods and vehicles, emphasizing the necessity to settle all requisite taxes and charges accrued during the period of delay. Motor vehicles remaining uncleared after the stipulated 30-day period will be auctioned off to the public.

To facilitate the auction process, URA has introduced an automated system accessible through singlewindow.go.ug/auction. This platform provides comprehensive information on terms and conditions of sale, auction site details, and other relevant auction-related information.

Goods sold at auction will be on an “as is” basis, and successful bidders will be required to pay applicable registration fees as per prevailing rates. Additionally, indicative storage charges have been specified based on the category of motor vehicles:

Cars up to 15CBM: $250

Cars greater than 15CBM: $350

Prime movers/Trucks: $600

Trailers: $1,000

These fees are denominated in US Dollars but payable at prevailing exchange rates in Kenya Shillings.

The URA has also announced an online viewing period from March 14 to March 19, 2024, with the bidding process scheduled to commence from March 20 to March 25, 2024.

The public notice, first published on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, aims to ensure compliance with customs regulations and streamline the clearance process at Mombasa Port.

For further inquiries and information, individuals are encouraged to contact the toll-free number 0800117000 or visit the URA website at www.ura.go.ug. Additionally, URA’s social media channels, including URAPage and URAuganda, are available for engagement and assistance.

“Developing Uganda Together” remains the overarching goal of URA’s management as they endeavor to facilitate efficient trade and revenue collection processes within the region.
