Jinja Road police are holding a female Probation Police Constable (PPC) suspected to have stabbed her Prison lover to death on Sunday following a domestic scuffle.

Mercy Alowo, who completed a police basic course three months ago and was under practical training at Jinja Road police division allegedly stabbed Wilfred Okori inside Luzira prisons in Nakawa Division, in Kampala.

Alowo and Okori were living as a couple before the former went for a 12-month training at the Police Training School (PTS) at Kabalye, in the Masindi district.

Alowo was deployed at the Jinja Road police division to attain field experience before she and 2500 other trainees were confirmed as Police Constables.

According to detectives, Alowo started residing at Jinja Road Police division staff quarters while her lover Okori continued living at his workplace in Luzira prisons.

Trouble, according to preliminary investigations started when Olowo went to stay with Okori as she attended the joint parade practices for the forthcoming International Women’s Day.

“On Sunday, Okori instructed Olowo to leave her house and start living with her fellow trainees something she did not agree with. Okori decided to throw Olowo’s belongings outside the house,” detectives said. Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson confirmed Olowo’s arrest.

Owoyesigyire added that investigations are ongoing to establish what exactly prompted Olowo to stab her lover to death. “Before Olowo went for the training, the two had a child who is now three years old. We have been told that Okori threw Olowo’s belongings outside and she responded by stabbing him with a knife she had on her back,” Owoyesigyire said.

Owoyesigyire said different accounts are coming up with others saying it was a domestic dispute that resulted in death while others say trouble started from a mobile phone. “The loss of life in this incident is regrettable and investigations are being done to establish the exact cause of the murder. The investigations are jointly being done by police and Uganda Prisons Services,” Owoyesigyire said.

Incidents of men in uniform killing each other have become common in the Kampala Metropolitan Area.

A police Corporal killed her lover using a pistol bomb at the Jinja Road police division last year. In cases where men and women in uniform have not killed their lovers, they have committed suicide.

In 2022, more than 10 police officers committed suicide and infidelity was one of the major reasons.
