Sam Ahamya, a well-known city lawyer, and 982 other people are being held in holding facilities in Kampala as a result of a four-day police operation.
The City lawyer is charged with using a pistol to shoot a watchman at King’s Park Arena in the Kakajjo zone of the Bweyogerere division of the Wakiso district.
The detainees are accused of several crimes, including rape, defilement, murder, assault, and robbery.
Luke Owoyesigyire, a deputy spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, stated that the operation began on Wednesday of last week and was conducted throughout the city.
The gunfire
According to Owoyesigyire, a watchman named Nekeon Buruga, 37, died as a result of a gunshot on Saturday at roughly 23:13 hours at King’s Park Arena, a rugby club.
He claimed that earlier in the day, Ahamya, the 47-year-old lawyer who is the suspected culprit and lives in Buziga, Makindye division of Kampala, took his kids to the rugby club for fun.
Ahamya allegedly left his pistol at the entry with a police officer at first, but he later picked it up at around 22:00 hours in the evening.
“He allegedly shot and killed Buruga by mistake while attempting to carry out a standard safety procedure with the magazine still in the weapon. After a thorough investigation, the Police opened a murder case as a result of the incident,” according to Owoyesigyire.
He stated that Ahamya was taken into custody at Kira Police Division and that the killer weapon was confiscated for forensic examination.
He claimed that City Mortuary had received the deceased’s body for a post-mortem examination.
“Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting as they work to unravel the details leading up to this unfortunate event,” Owoyesigyre stated.
Recovered dead body
According to Owoyesigyire, homicide investigators in the Buloba, Wakiso area, have reported a troubling murder case following the discovery of a lifeless body estimated to be 34 years old.
“The body, which had deep cut wounds, has since been conveyed to the City Mortuary for post-mortem examination, with investigations currently underway,” stated the official.
