Uganda Women’s National basketball team, the Gazelles, secured their first-ever qualification for the quarterfinals of the FIBA Women’s Afrobasket on Tuesday night.
The history-making moment came after an impressive 78-62 victory over DR Congo at the Kigali Arena.
Having won two out of their three games so far, including a remarkable triumph against Senegal, the Gazelles displayed remarkable determination throughout the tournament.
Going into the game, the Gazelles Head Coach Alberto Antuna had acknowledged that despite losing all its group games against Nigeria and Egypt, he never underestimated the supremacy of Dr. Congo, but, maintained that his team had no respect for the who is who in this tournament.
He noted that they would pick confidence from the first win against powerhouses Senegal.
The game against DR Congo was intensely contested from the start, with the Congolese holding a narrow 15-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.
However, the Gazelles regrouped swiftly in the second quarter, resulting in a halftime tie of 30-30.
The Ugandan team’s tenacity shone in the gripping second half, outscoring DR Congo by 23-15 in the third quarter, leading with a score of 53-45.
In the final quarter, the Gazelles dominated with an impressive 25 baskets, sealing their victory at 78-62.
Key players Jannon Otto and Jane Asinde both scored 18 points, while Claire Lamunu’s double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds contributed significantly to the triumph.
Melissa Akullu added 10 points and 9 rebounds, Lydia Babirye registered 11 assists, and Hope Akello secured 11 rebounds.
The win propels the Gazelles into the quarterfinals of the continental showpiece, a feat never accomplished before.
They will face Rwanda in the quarterfinals, who earned a direct ticket after topping Group A. The upcoming match against Rwanda presents a tough challenge for the Ugandan team, considering the home advantage and passionate support of the Rwandan fans.
Despite being predominantly comprised of local players, the Gazelles have demonstrated exceptional teamwork, paving the way for their historic achievements in the tournament.
Head Coach Alberto Antuna expressed pride in the team’s performance, proving that unity and determination know no bounds, irrespective of international experience.
