Over 100 suspected criminals in Kira Municipality have been arrested during a two-day intelligence-led operation conducted by joint security agencies.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson says the operations were conducted on Friday and Saturday.
He says the suspected criminals are connected with recent thefts and murders in Kira Municipality.
Owoyesigyire says out of the 100 individuals detained, five were on the Police’s wanted list for allegedly taking part in robberies that resulted in killings in Kira. “Investigations are on them and the suspects are also being screened,” says Owoyesigyire.
In the last few months, criminals have been attacking people in the areas of Kyanja, Kira, Kasangati, Kyaliwajjala, Najjera, Kiwatule and Namugongo. Last month, Suzan Alweny, a city lawyer was killed by criminals using a paver on the Kiwatule-Naalya road at about 9 p.m after she had stopped at Kiwatule to buy snacks.
Similarly, unknown assailants assassinated George Ekochu, a relative of Capt. Mike Mukula, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) vice chairman for Eastern Uganda, on September 13th, 2022. He was hit on the head with an iron bar in Namugongo, a few minutes after leaving his house to go and buy milk and bread.
Meanwhile, the coordinated security operations come barely a week after thugs raided the home of Interpol director, Assistant Inspector General of Police- AIGP Grace Akullo. Owoyesigyire also further said that the police and military operations will continue with the operations until the whole of Kira Municipality is free of criminals.
