1 Mins read

One of the six health workers who contracted Ebola has passed on this morning at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital.

Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng has announced the deceased as Dr Mohammed Ali, a 37-year-old Tanzanian national.

“I regret to announce that we have lost our first doctor, Dr Mohammed Ali, a Tanzanian National, 37yr old Male today at 3:15am.”

The minister said Muhammed tested positive for Ebola on September 26, 2022 and died while receiving treatment in the Isolation facility.

The doctor’s death was first confirmed by Dr Alex Adaku, the Fort Portal Hospital Director while speaking to URN on phone.

He however had refrained from revealing the identity of the deceased, mostly due to diplomatic considerations arising from the deceased’s status.

According to Dr Adaku, the doctor who had been critically ill passed on Saturday early morning. He says that the remaining five medics who are still being managed at the facility are in stable condition.

The hospital has been managing six health workers since Wednesday after they were transferred from Mubende Regional Referral Hospital to Fort Portal for proper management and treatment.

The infected group comprised three doctors, two nurses and one anaesthetist.

The Health Ministry last week confirmed an outbreak of Ebola in Mubende District after a sample taken from a 24-year-old male from Madudu sub-county came out positive with the Sudan strain of Ebola.

As of Friday, according to Minister Aceng, the country had 35 confirmed cases with seven deaths.

Ebola has been confirmed in four districts including Mubende where the first case was reported.

Others are Kyegegwa with three confirmed cases, Kassanda with one case and Kagadi where another case was confirmed case.
