The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria was created in 2002 to raise, manage and invest the world’s money to respond to three of the deadliest infectious diseases the world has ever known.
The Global Fund (GF) is a partnership designed to accelerate the end of AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as epidemics. As an international organization, the Global Fund mobilizes and invests more than US$4 billion a year to support programs run by local experts in more than 100 countries. In partnership with governments, civil society, technical agencies, the private sector and people affected by the diseases, GF addresses barriers while embracing innovation.
The Global Fund partnership model is designed to promote innovative solutions to global health challenges. Countries take the lead in determining where and how to best fight AIDS, TB and malaria. Collectively, the Global Fund harnesses the best possible experience, insights and innovation in the public and private sectors to respond to diseases and build resilient and sustainable systems for health.
To-date, Uganda has contributed a total of US$3.08 million to the Global Fund. The country pledged US$2 million for the Global Fund’s Sixth Replenishment, covering 2020-2022. Uganda is both a donor to the Global Fund and an implementer of Global Fund-supported programs.
As part of the global response to COVID-19, the Global Fund is working with health leaders, partners and governments to ensure the global response to COVID-19 includes lessons learned from the fight against HIV, TB and malaria: protect human rights and address stigma and discrimination, particularly among key and vulnerable populations; fight human rights and gender barriers to health; engage communities in the response; and fairly allocate limited COVID-19 resources and new tools so that no one is left behind. The Global Fund contributed US$ 129M to help Uganda continue to fight COVID-19 protect health workers and reinforce systems for health.
